Meaning and examples
What is a cursed image?
A cursed image is a photograph-like image that feels wrong, confusing, funny, unsettling, or impossible to explain.
A simple definition
The best cursed images make you ask who took this, where this is, why this is happening, and why the image exists. Their power comes from low context, everyday scenes turning abnormal, and the urge to share them.
What counts
- Found-photo weirdness and no-context public scenes
- Strange products, signs, rooms, bathrooms, dolls, and mannequins
- Ambiguous scenes that feel wrong without relying on shock
- Safe liminal spaces when they fit the archive standard
What does not count
- Ordinary memes, caption jokes, or text screenshots
- AI-generated images or obvious Photoshop
- Gore, death, pornography, hate, or doxxing
- Images where humiliating a private person is the point
Related, but different
- Creepy images
- Lean toward horror; cursed images lean toward low context and hard-to-explain wrongness.
- Memes
- Rely on format or text; cursed images rely on the picture itself.
- Liminal spaces
- Focus on empty transitional places. They overlap, but are not automatically cursed.
- AI images
- Are synthetic. The main archive prioritizes found-photo authenticity.
